As self-employed baddies, we know that one of the most difficult tasks can be securing new clients. I remember starting out, and how intimidating it was to put myself and my photography out there, to compete with more established photographers, and to make a name for myself in the industry. But over the past year, I've been honing my networking skills, taking every opportunity to grow my network, and learning that community is a huge part of it all. Getting involved in communities you’re passionate about can be a powerful tool to grow your network, gain new clients, and support other like-minded individuals. By surrounding myself with others who share my passion for photography, I've found more opportunities to showcase my work, collaborate on new projects, and even learn new skills from those around me. In this blog post, I want to share my experiences and tips for using community to find new clients within the photography world.

Through my experience over the last 6 months, I've learned that expanding your network doesn't always mean sticking within your niche community. Collaborating with like-minded businesses and individuals outside your usual circle can lead to new connections and opportunities. Building solid relationships with new clients is also crucial. It's not just about landing a single paid gig, but rather fostering connections that can lead to repeat work and recommendations to others. This can lead to a steady stream of clients and a stronger, more diversified network.

Finding Your Community:

When it comes to finding and joining photography communities, there are several options available to you. One of the most accessible is to use social media platforms, such as Facebook, to search for groups or pages related to photography in your area. This can be a great way to connect with other photographers and get involved in local events or meetups. Additionally, attending photography-related events or workshops in your area can be a valuable way to meet new people and learn new skills. But don't limit yourself to only your niche community. Stepping outside your niche community for events and networking is a good way to meet people. Look for events focused on a particular topic or interest that you share. You can also contact other photographers and creators directly through social media, either by commenting on their posts or sending them a direct message to introduce yourself. Remember, community is about supporting one another, so be sure to engage and offer support to your fellow photographers and creators.

Building Relationships:

Building relationships within photography communities is crucial for growing your network and finding new clients. One effective strategy is to collaborate with other photographers and creators on projects, which can lead to new opportunities and connections. Hosting events, such as photo walks or meetups, is also a great way to bring people together and form new relationships. Additionally, it's important to support other photographers and creators within the community. By sharing their work, offering feedback, and helping promote their projects, you can foster meaningful relationships and potentially gain new clients through referrals. Remember, building relationships takes time and effort, but the payoff can be huge for your business and personal growth.

Leveraging Your Network:

Leveraging your network within photography communities is a great way to find new clients. One effective method is to ask for referrals from other photographers or clients you have worked with. If you've built strong relationships within the community, people are likely to recommend your services to others in their network. It's also a good idea to promote your work on social media, and encourage others to share your content. This can help expand your reach and get your work in front of potential clients who may not have otherwise known about you.

In addition, consider offering to collaborate on projects with other photographers or businesses within the community. This not only helps build your portfolio and skills, but can also lead to new client opportunities. By working together, you may be able to tap into each other's networks and gain exposure to new audiences.

Hosting events or giveaways is another great strategy for fostering relationships within the community and attracting potential clients. You could host a photography exhibit or workshop, or even organize a social event for photographers and clients to network and connect. This can help establish you as a leader in the community and increase your visibility to potential clients.

To sum things up, as a self-employed photographer and creator, I've learned that building a strong network and community is crucial for finding new clients and growing my business. By expanding my network through social media, attending events and workshops, and collaborating with like-minded individuals, I've been able to showcase my work, learn new skills, and tap into new client opportunities. By supporting each other and fostering meaningful connections, we can help each other grow our businesses and gain exposure to new audiences. Overall, building a strong network and community has been a powerful tool for me as a photographer, and I encourage others to explore the benefits of community building for their own businesses.
